(House Joint Resolution 28)
House Joint Resolution to repeal Joint Resolution 23 of 1957 and
requesting the appointment of a Maryland Civil War Centennial
Commission to arrange plans for the Centennial of the Battle of
Antietam and other famous battles of the Civil War.
Whereas, The Free State of Maryland was witness to and a vital
part of some of the famous battles and campaigns of the Civil War;
and
Whereas, These battles, among them the Battle of Antietam,
which occurred on September 17, 1862, will shortly reach their
Centennial observance; and
Whereas, The State of Pennsylvania by Chapter 487 of the 1956
Legislature has appointed a Gettysburg Centennial Commission to
make appropriate observance of this great event; and
Whereas, The Federal Gvernment GOVERNMENT, through its
National Park Service, is planning for observances of the other
famous battles and campaigns of the Civil War; and
Whereas, It is fitting and proper that the State of Maryland
should join in the planning and celebration of these epoch-making
events; and
Whereas, It is, therefore, desirable that a Commission be named
to assist the other State and similar Commissions and the Park
Service in commemorating these battles and in proving a fitting
celebration in our own State of the battles fought and campaigns
waged on our soil; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the Governor
be requested to appoint a Commission of this State to be known
as the Maryland Civil War Centennial Commission to plan and
arrange for the proper commemoration of the Centennial of the
Battle of Antietam (Sharpsburg) and other campaigns of the Civil
War fought on Maryland soil; and be it further
Resolved, That the Commission be requested to coordinate its
planning with the Battles Commission of other States observing
Centennials of the Civil War battles and with the National Park
Service; and be it further
Resolved, That the Governor be requested to provide such funds
for the Commission as may be necessary to carry out the purposes
of this Resolution; and be it further
Resolved, To repeal JR 23 of 1957; and be it further
