No. 21
(House Joint Resolution 23)
House Joint Resolution expressing to the new State of Hawaii the
welcome of the people of the State of Maryland.
The people of the State of Maryland, speaking through their Gen-
eral Assembly, send cordial greetings and a hearty welcome to their
fellow citizens in the 50th State, Hawaii.
A republic was formed in Hawaii in 1894 and pursuant to the
request of the people of Hawaii as expressed through the legislature
of the new republic, and a resolution of the United States Congress
approved July 7, 1898, the islands were formally annexed to the
United States on August 12, 1898, as a territory.
The Territory of Hawaii has since its establishment, become an
increasingly important center of commerce and industry.
Its people have taken a keen interest in local self-government and
have persistently requested statehood. Its Legislature has petitioned
Congress for Statehood no less than fourteen times since 1940.
Her people, both in the Armed Forces and in civilian life, have
shown an understanding of American institutions and a devotion to
those institutions. Hawaii has become an important naval and mili-
tary base and more particularly a great social and economic factor
in the life of our nation.
Maryland, as one of the thirteen original colonies, salutes the
achievements and the prospects of Hawaii, our newest sister State;
now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the General Asseembly ASSEMBLY of Maryland,
That the warmest greetings of this State and of its citizens be
extended to the State and citizens of Hawaii on the occasion of its
becoming a State; and be it further
Resolved, That the Secretary of State of Maryland be directed to
send a copy of this Resolution under the Great Seal of the State of
Maryland to the Honorable William Quinn, Governor of the State
of Hawaii at Honolulu.
