The [county commissioners] State's attorney of Charles County
[are] is authorized to appoint an assistant State's attorney and a
secretary [to the State's attorney, each] , the assistant State's at-
torney to receive a salary of $1,800.00.00 a year until January 1, 1959
JUNE 1, 1957, at which time the salary shall be $2,400.00 annually.
The salary of the secretary to the State's attorney shall be $3,00.00
annually.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act is hereby declared
to be an emergency measure and necessary for the immediate preser-
vation of the public health and safety and having been passed by a
yea and nay vote, supported by three-fifths of all the members elected
to each of the two Houses of the General Assembly of Maryland, the
same shall take effect from the date of its passage.

(House Bill 481)
AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 38 (x) of
Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1956 Supplement)
title "Sheriffs", sub-title "Compensation and Duties" increasing
the annual salary of Baltimore City Deputy Sheriffs.
Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 38 (x) of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1956 Supplement), title "Sheriffs", sub-title "Compensation and
Duties", be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted, with amend-
ments, to read as follows:
38. Salaries and expenses; deputies.
(x) Baltimore City.—In Baltimore City, the sheriff shall receive
an annual salary of $10,000. He shall appoint an under-sheriff and
chief deputy at an annual salary of $6,500, one writ clerk and two
assistant writ clerks at an annual salary of $5,000 each, one stenog-
rapher and docket clerk at an annual salary of $3,900 and such
number of deputy sheriffs as may be authorized in the annual ordi-
nance of estimates in Baltimore City at annual salaries of [$4,100]
$4,500 each. Provision shall also be made in said ordinance for the
expenses of the office of the sheriff, including the purchase and
maintenance of motor vehicles, and the mayor and city council shall
have the same power with respect to the salaries and expenses of the
office of sheriff as it has under the city charter with respect to the
salaries and expenses of all municipal departments, except as other-
wise herein provided.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
January 1, 1958.
