contained in Chapter 139 of the Laws of Maryland, 1906, and to
enact a new Charter for the "Maryland Institute."

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Chapter 313 of the Laws of Maryland as amended from time
to time, the last said amendment being that contained in Chapter
139 of the Laws of Maryland, 1906, foe and it is hereby repealed,
and that a new Charter be and it is hereby enacted in lieu thereof
for the "Maryland Institute", and to read as follows:

1.    The members of the Maryland Institute for the promotion of
the mechanic arts and those who shall hereafter become members,
shall be and hereby are incorporated a body corporate by the name of
"The Maryland Institute."

2.    The purposes of the Institute shall be the encouragement and
the promotion and education in the mechanic and fine arts and other
allied subjects.

3.    The Institute shall have the power to establish a school of
higher learning in the fine arts and may establish such associated
schools as may foe necessary or desirable to carry out the purposes
of the Institute, and, further, to do all other acts which may be
necessary or desirable to carry out said purposes. The Institute may
grant to qualified students appropriate degrees and such certificates
of proficiency and attainments in any special study as said Institute
may see proper to confer and may also grant such honorary degrees
as may be proper to any person who may merit such distinction.

4.    The Institute shall have the power to sue and be sued, to have
a common seal, to receive gifts of real or personal property and
interests therein of any kind whatsoever, to hold, use, occupy, enjoy,
lease, sell, mortgage, convey or otherwise encumber or dispose of
any or all of its property as it shall deem proper, and to do all other
acts, matters or things permitted to corporations under the Laws
of Maryland.

5.    The Institute shall be composed of the present members
thereof and such other persons who may foe elected to membership
by the Trustees.

6.    The affairs of the Institute shall be governed and controlled
by Trustees who shall be elected by the members of the Institute and
who shall not be less than 12 nor more than 21, and the Trustees
shall be, elected from among the members of the Institute and such
Trustees shall serve for such terms and on such conditions as may
be fixed by the by-laws.

7.    The Trustees shall have the power to select such officers and
agents as to them may be desirable and to adopt such by-laws, rules
and regulations for the governing of the Institute as they may deem
desirable.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1957.
