Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 38 (n) of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1951 Edition), title "Sheriffs", sub-title "Compensations and
Duties", be and the same is hereby repealed and re-enacted, with
amendments, to read as follows:
38.
(n) The Sheriff of Kent County shall receive an annual salary of
[$2,500] $4,000 and $400 annually during his term toward [the
purchase of] an automobile to be used by him and his deputy for
general work of the office. He may appoint a deputy who shall receive
an annual salary of [$1,500] $3,500 and an allowance to be made by
the County Commissioners to the sheriff and his deputy or deputies
for such mileage as may be accumulated in the course of their duties.
The County Commissioners shall allow said sheriff such funds as
shall be necessary to compensate a matron and a cook at the Kent
County jail.
The County Commissioners may authorize such additional deputies
as may be necessary and shall fix their compensation upon their
appointment by the sheriff.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall not be con-
strued to 'apply to the term of office of the Sheriff of Kent County in
office on the effective date of this Act, but shall apply to the next term
of office.
Sec. 3. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1957.

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, sub-section (c)
of Section 6 of Article 52 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1951 Edition and 1956 Supplement), title "Justices of the Peace",
sub-title "Civil Jurisdiction", and to add a new sub-section to said
section, said new sub-section to be known as sub-section (k) and
to follow immediately after sub-section (j) of said section, relat-
ing to civil jurisdiction of Trial Magistrates in Harford County.
