1642                             Joint Resolutions

plete re-survey of the Potomac River Basin. We urge that increased
funds be made available to the Corps of Engineers so that this work
may be completed by 1960.

The Conference also urges all other Federal agencies and depart-
ments which are presently engaged in studies or surveys on the
Potomac River to expedite their work and coordinate their planning
with the work being undertaken by the Corps of Engineers. We urge
these agencies and departments to seek independently funds neces-
sary to complete their work.

In view of the urgency of the problem in the headwaters of the
Potomac River Basin, the Conference urges the completion of the
North Branch phase of the re-survey by June 1, 1957, and that funds
necessary to complete this phase of the overall project be appro-
priated if necessary.

The Conference has noted the urgency of water supply for the
Metropolitan Area of Washington and feels that an early solution
and full exploration is necessary for this problem. In this connection,
the Conference urges Congress to provide the funds necessary to
complete the River Bend Area phase of the re-survey report of the
Potomac River within the next year.

Upon completion of the reports from the Army Corps of Engineers
and in consideration of the reports available from other cooperating
agencies, this Conference feels that the respective chairmen from the
various jurisdictions should plan to call back their members to another
such conference as this, to determine what further action may be
desirable or necessary at that time.

This Conference feels that a group of legislative representatives
such as this one, could do much to educate the people of their re-
spective states and the District of Columbia of the urgent need not
only for the adoption of a comprehensive plan for the Potomac River,
but also could educate the people as to the advantages of such a plan
to insure the orderly development of the resources of the river to the
best advantages possible for all of the reas adjacent to the Potomac
River; now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the General
Assembly adopts the recommendations of the Conference on the Poto-
mac River Basin; and be it further

Resolved, That the Legislative Council be requested to reappoint
the special committee on the Potomac River Basin or that a similar
committee be appointed to continue the study of the Potomac River;
and be it further

Resolved, That copies of this resolution be sent to the Governors
of the States of Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, the Commissioners
of the District of Columbia, to each member and speaker at the Con-
ference, and to the Maryland Delegation in Congress.

Approved April 10, 1957.
