Resolved, That the Secretary of State be directed to send copies
of this Resolution under the Great Seal of the State of Maryland to
the family of the late Mr. Tawes, to the Board of County Commis-
sioners of Somerset County and to the newspapers published in
Somerset County.

(House Joint Resolution 44)
House Joint Resolution adopting the recommendations of the Con-
ference on the Potomac River Basin, and urging continuation of
the Committee on the Potomac River Basin by the Legislative
Council.
Whereas, The Legislative Conference on the Potomac River Basin
was attended by representatives of the States of Maryland, Virginia,
Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia, and was held in the State
House, Annapolis, on February 18, 19, and 20, 1957; and
Whereas, The Conference adopted the following recommendations:
1. We recommend that this Conference of Legislative Representa-
tives be continued as a permanent group. This meeting has been
attended by representatives from the various jurisdictions concerned
with the Potomac River, and the Conference feels that the solution
to the problems of the Potomac lies only through close cooperation
among the interested agencies and jurisdictions affected. Through
such cooperation, the Conference feels that the problems of the Poto-
mac River can be solved to the maximum advantage of all the persons
affected by the Potomac River. Future meetings should be called as
necessary to work out the following problems:
a. Public water supply
b. Industrial water supply
c. Recreational uses
d. Flood control
e. Power
f. Navigation
g. Agricultural supplemental irrigation
h. Disposal (sewage and industrial waste)
i. Watershed improvement and management
The Conference feels that solution of these problems can be achieved
primarily through an educational program which can best be carried
out by the members of this Conference within their own jurisdiction,

the work of the Army Engineers in completing their new and com-
