CHAP. 45.

Entitled to dower
in land

Proviso.

cates of several respectable persona acquainted with the facts that
the principal if not the whole of the purchase money was paid by
her father, and from her brother James Norman's estate: And
whereas the said Rachel hath in her said petition prayed to be al-
lowed her dower in the said land, which appears to be reasonable
and just, therefore,
1. Be it enacted, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the
said Rachel Weems shall be entitled to have her dower in said
land, laid off and assigned to her in the same manner as if her hus-
band had died seized in fee simple of the same, any law to the con-
trary notwithstanding; Provided always, that nothing herein con-
tained shall be construed to affect the rights of the creditors of the
said John Weems.

move a slave into
this state.

Provisos.

CHAP. XLVI.

An Act to authorise William A. Palmore to import and bring into this State a
Negro Slave therein mentioned.

Whereas it appears to this general assembly, that William A.
Palmore removed to this state from the state of Virginia, and was
at the time of removal unable to bring a certain negro slave, his
property, called Toney, he being at that time an apprentice; there-
fore,
1. Be it enacted, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That said
William A. Palmore be and he is hereby authorised and empowered,
at any time or times within two years after the passage of this act,
to remove from the state of Virginia, and bring into this state, the
said negro slave by the name of Toney, to whom he was entitled
at the time of his fixing his residence in this state, and that the re-
moval of said slave, and bringing him into the state of Maryland,
shall not be deemed or taken or in any manner be construed or
operate to entitle him to freedom; Provided, that the said negro
slave, when removed agreeably to the provisions of this act, shall
be recorded in the. records of Somerset county court, within three
months alter his arrival in said county; And provided also, that it
shall not be lawful for the said William A. Palmore to dispose of
the said slave, within three years after the importation of said slave.

CHAP. XLVII.

An Act for the relief James Stewart and Martin Rockefield, of Washington Coun-
ty, and William Deming, and Nicholas N. Robinson, of the City of Baltimore.

1. Be it enacted, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the
judges of the orphans and county courts of Washington county, be
and they are hereby authorised and required, to afford to James
Stewart and Martin Rockefield, the benefit of the insolvent laws of
this state, in as full and ample manner, to all intents and purposes,
as if they had respectively resided two whole years in this state be-
fore the time of their application for the same, any law to the con-
trary notwithstanding; Provided always, that the said courts shall
be first satisfied that the said James Stewart and Martin Rockefield,
did not remove into this state for the purpose of obtaining the be-
nefit of the said insolvent laws.
2. And be it enacted, That the judges of the county court of Bal-
timore county, and the commissioners of insolvent debtors in the
city of Baltimore, be and they are hereby authorised and required,
to afford to William Deming and Nicholas N. Robinson, the bene-
fit of the insolvent laws of this state, in as full and ample manner
to every intent and purpose, as if they had resided two whole years
