at liberty to imprison the said King, and keep him in confinement
as long as the commissioners shall have his case under considera-
tion, And provided alto, that if their report be favorable, he shall
be forthwith discharged from imprisonment.

CHAPTER 56.
An act for the relief of John W. Steinmetz, of Washington county.
Sec. 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That the deed from Martin Myers, of Washington county, to John
W. Steinmetz, of said county, bearing date the eleventh day of
May, in the year one thousand eight hundred and twenty four, for
a lot of ground in the town of Clear Spring, in the county afore-
said, be, and the same is hereby declared to have all the force and
effect to transfer the right and title of the said Martin Myers, of,
in, and to the property mentioned in said deed, to the said John
W. Steinmetz, as if the said John W. Steinmetz had been natu-
ralised before the execution of the said deed, agreeably to the laws

of the United States, regulating the naturalization of foreigners;,
Provided always, That nothing contained in this act, shall be taken
or construed in any manner to affect any right, title, or claim to the
said property, or any part thereof, which may have been acquired
by any other person or persons before the passage of this act.

9. And be it enacted, That the said John W. Steinmetz, be, and
he is hereby empowered and declared capable to purchase, have,
hold, possess and enjoy real estate in this state, and the same to
convey, transfer, or transmit by deed, devise or descent, in the same
manner and subject to the same rules, as if he were at the time
regularly naturalized, agreeably to the laws of the United States

Proviso.

regulating the naturalization of foreigners; Provided also, that the
said John W. Steinmetz shall within twelve months after the pas-
sage of this act, naturalize himself agreeably to the laws of the
United States; but if the said John W. Steinmetz should die be-
fore he becomes naturalized, nothing in this proviso shall prevent
him from transmitting or transferring his said property by descent
or devise, to any person or persons, being a citizen or citizens of
the United States, and residing therein, capable in, law to hold the
same.

CHAPTER 57.

An act to repeal an act passed at December Session, eighteen hundred and
twenty three, chapter fifteen, relating to the protection of slave holders
in Dorchester County.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland, That an act
passed at December session eighteen hundred and twenty three,
chapter fifteen, entitled, "An act to repeal an act relating to the
protection of slave holders in Dorchester county, be, and the same
is hereby repealed.
