SAMUEL STEVENS, Jr. ESQUIRE, GOVERNOR.

Dec. Ses. 1824

Gardiner and Francis Neale, or a majority of them, were appoint
ed and authorised to lay off Saint Mary's county into five separate
election districts, on or before the first day of April eighteen hun-
dred and twenty four; And whereas a majority of the said com-
missionen proceeded subsequent to the first day of April as men-
tioned, and divided Saint Mary's county into five election dis-
tricts, and made a return thereof according to law to the clerk of
said county; And whereas, they did not act on or before the first
day of April eighteen hundred and twenty four, as prescribed by
the law, there exists much doubt as it respects the legality of the
proceedings of said commissioners; Therefore,

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the di-
vision of Saint Mary's county into five separate election districts
done and performed by the said above mentioned commissioners,
and all their other acts and doings relative thereto, be, and are
hereby legalized, confirmed and made valid.

CHAPTER 17.
An act for the relief of Mary Cheezum, of Caroline county.
Whereas, Mary Cheezum was convicted at October term last
for Caroline county, in two separate cases, for retailing spirituous
liquors without license, and as the said Mary Cheezum is utterly
unable to pay the fees in said prosecutions, and is now confined in
the county jail for the same; Therefore,
Sec. 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That the said Mary Cheezum be discharged from her said im-
prisonment.
2. And be it enacted, That the levy court for Caroline county at
their next annual levy, be, and they are hereby required to levy
on the assessable property of said county all the fees that have or
may accrue in the two said prosecutions, from the commencement
of the same until her discharge from prison.

CHAPTER 18.

An act to alter and change the name of John Vaine, of Caroline county, to
John Clinton Cooper.
Sec. 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That the name of John Vaine, of Caroline county, be, and is
hereby changed and altered to the name of John Clinton Cooper;
and it shall and may be lawful for the said John Vaine, at all times
hereafter, to be called and known by, and hold ami use the name of
John Clinton Cooper, and by said name to sell, purchase, convey,
device, and to sue, and be sued, in any court of law or equity.
2. And be it further enacted, That all securities, promises, con-
tracts, assurances, deeds and lawful acts whatsoever hereafter to
be made or done, by or to the said John Vaine, by the name of
John Clinton Cooper, shall be of the same force and effect and
equally valid to all intents and purposes, as if the name of John
Clinton Cooper had been his first and original name.
