CHAPTER 27.
An act to ascertain the allowance to Sheriffs for keeping prisoners in jail, charged
with criminal offences, and finding them victuals, in the several counties
therein mentioned.
Sec. 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,That
it shall and may be lawful for the sheriffs of Caroline and Somerset
counties, to ask, demand and receive, for keeping prisoners in jail
charged with criminal offence, and finding him victuals, twenty
cents per day (exclusive of fire wood) to be levied and collected ac-
cording to law.

Passed Dec.
1 18, 1823.

Allowance;

2. And be it enacted, That this act shall take effect and be in
force from and after the first day of March next.
3. And be it enacted, That all laws and usages repugnant and con-
trary to this act, be, and the same is hereby repealed.

CHAPTER 28.

An act to revive an act entitled, a supplement to an act entitled, an act for the
preservation of the breed of Wild Deer in Somerset and Dorchester counties,
so far as relates to Dorchester county.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland, That an act
entitled, a supplement to an act entitled, an act to revive an act for
the preservation of the breed of Wild Deer in Somerset and Dorches-
ter counties, passed December session, 1817, chap. 161, be, and the
same is hereby revived and declared to be in full force and operation
in Dorchester county.

CHAPTER 29.

An act for the destruction of Panthers in Allegany county.
Whereas, it is represented to this General Assembly that Pan-
thers are mischievous in Allegany county, and destroy sheep and
young cattle—Therefore,

17, 1843,

Sec. 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland, That when
any credible person or persons shall bring before any justice of the
peace for Allegany county, the head of any Panther and make oath or
affirmation, as the case may require, that the Panther, of which the
head is produced, was killed within the limits of Allegany county
within six days next before the producing of the same to such justice
of the peace, that then such justice shall, and is hereby authorised and
directed to give such person or persons producing the same, a certifi-
cate for such head produced and proved as aforesaid, and in such
certificate to mention the oath or affirmation taken; that every justice
before whom any Panther's head is brought and by whom a certificate
shall be given as aforesaid, shall cause the ears to be cut off and the
tongue to be taken out of said Panther's head, to prevent such head
from being a second time produced before a justice in order to obtain
a certificate.

2. And be it enacted, that every person or persons producing such
certificate as aforesaid to the justices of Allegany county at the Levy
Court, shall for every Panther's head be allowed five dollars, to be by
the said justices assessed and levied in the county levy, and to be
paid by the collector to such person or persons as shall be entitled to
the same within the same time and in the same manner as other coun-
ty dues are paid.
