to be paid by the county, which sum of money shall be collected and
paid over as other county charges are levied and collected, and paid

4. And be it enacted, That the commissioners so as aforesaid, ap-
pointed for their services, shall have an allowance of two dollars
each for each day they shall attend in discharge of the duties herein
required.

CHAPTER 133.

An act for the relief of Susanna Brown, Mary Kerby, Eleanor Bow-
ling, Mary Dorsey and Chloe Dart, of Saint Mary's county.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary land, That the jus-
tices of the levy court of Saint Mary's county be, and they are here-
by authorised and empowered at their annual meeting, if they shall
see fit, and so long as they shall 9ee cause so to do, to assess and
levy on the assessable property of said county, such sum as they may
deem necessary for the support and maintenance of Susanna Brown,
Mary Kerby, Eleanor Bowling, Mary Dorsey and Chloe Dart, of said
county, and that the said sum so levied and collected be paid by the
officer collecting the same to each of the said persons respectively,
or their order, in such proportion as the said justices may direct.

CHAPTER 134.

A further and additional supplement to an art, entitled, An act concern-
ing crime. i and punishments.
Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland, That
an act, entitled, a further and additional supplement to the act, en-
titled, An act concerning crimes and punishments, passed at Decem-
ber session, eighteen hundred and twenty-one, chapter one hundred"
and ninety-three, be, and the same is hereby repealed.

Charges re-
mitted.

2. And be it enacted, That the directors of the penitentiary are
hereby required and empowered to remit to the officers of the said
penitentiary any charge or charges against said officers for their board
for the year eighteen hundred and twenty-two, any law to the con-
trary notwithstanding; but it shall not be construed so as to permit
the said directors to give or allow the officers of said penitentiary,
any sum or sums in money or bank bills more than is or are allowed
by law.

CHAPTER 135.

An act for the relief of Stephen Bryan, of St. Mary's county.
WHEREAS, it has been represented to this general assembly of
by the petition of Stephen Bryan, a free man of colour, that
he has been committed to the gaol of St. Mary's county, by virtue
of a warrant from one of the justices of the peace for the said)
county, issued at the request of a free woman of colour, charging
the petitioner of being the father of an illegitimate child; and where-
as it appears that the petitioner has been confined in the said gaol
since February last, for want of that security required by law, which
by his indigent circumstances he has no hopes of obtaining; and
whereas it appears that he made application to the county court, at
the two last terms for a discharge, which was refused him, on the
ground of being without their jurisdiction; therefore,

Release.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the
sheriff of St. Mary's county be, and he is hereby empowered and di-
