CHAP. 144.

arisen whether the said sum of money should be paid until the
conclusion of the present year, and as such a construction would
be manifestly against the intention of the legislature in passing
that act, Therefore,

deprive commis-
sioners of money,
&c.

1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the
said extension shall not be construed to deprive the said commis-
sioners of the said sum of money, or to postpone the payment of
the same until the conclusion of the present year.

Not to be entitled

to any further
sum.

2. And be it enacted, That the said commissioners shall not be
entitled to any further sum from the said lottery during the pre-
sent year, in consequence of the extension of the same.

CHAP. CXLV.

An Act to incorporate the Medical Society of Baltimore.

1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland, That
J. M. Keagy, R. S. Stewart, William Gemmill, James Heighe, J.
B. Rutledge, T. Myers, J. Fonerden, J. Elbert, W. S. Way, H.
W. Webster. J. B. Owings, W. Waller, E. Demsey, James
Owings, J. Parker, J. Fisher, B. W. Bassett, J. Cohen. L. Fen-
wick, J. Hammond, and such persons as they may from time to
time elect, and their successors, are hereby declared to be one
community, corporation, and body politic for ever, by and under
the name and title of The Medical Society of Baltimore, and by
and under the same name and title, they shall he able and capa-
ble in law to sue and be sued, plead and be impleaded, answer
and defend, and be answered and defended, in courts of law and
equity, or in any other place whatever, to purchase, take, have
and enjoy, to them and their successors, in fee or for a less estate or
estates, any lands, tenements, rents, annuities, chattels, bank
stock, registered debts, or other public securities within this state,
by the gift, bargain, sale, or devise, of any person or persons,
bodies politic or corporate, capable to make the same, and the
same at their pleasure to alien, sell, transfer or lease, and apply
to purposes as they may judge most, conducive to the promoting
medical knowledge, and to make, have, and use a common seal,
and the same to change and renew at pleasure, and generally to
do every other act or thing necessary to carry into effect the pro-
visions of this act, and promote the design of said corporation;
Provided nevertheless, that the said medical society of Baltimore,
or body politic, shall not at one time hold or possess property
real, personal, or mixed, exceeding in total value the sum of one
thousand dollars per annum.

Appointment of
officers.

2. And be it enacted, That the said corporation shall annually,
on the first Tuesday in April, or at such other times as by their
by-laws or regulations may be appointed, elect from the members
of said corporation a president, vice president, recording se-
cretary, a corresponding secretary, a treasurer, a standing com-
mittee consisting of three members, and an examining committee
consisting of six members, to serve for the term of twelve months,
or until others shall be chosen.

3. And be it enacted, That every person who upon application
shall be, elected a member of the medical society of Baltimore,
shall be entitled to a diploma or certificate of membership, for
which he shall pay the sum of five dollars to the society.
