LAWS OF MARYLAND.

CHAPTER 430.

Passed March
8, 1858.

AN ACT entitled an act appointing Commission-
ers to establish a Free School in Vansville Dis-
trict, Prince George's county.

appointed and
invested with
power and au-
thority.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assem-
bly of Maryland, That Ethan A. Jones, Septi-
mus J. Cook and Ninian Beall, of Prince George's
county, be and they are hereby appointed com-
missioners, and they, or a majority of them, are
hereby authorised and empowered to establish and
locale a free school in Vansville district, in said
county, within the following bounds or limits: be-
ginning at Walker's Mill, running east to Har-
vey's lower gate; thence north, with a line pass-
ing by the Union Meeting House, and intersecting
with the Eastern Branch; thence with the said
Branch, to the beginning; if in their opinion it
will conduce to the interest of the inhabitants of
said district and neighborhood.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That the said com-
missioners shall, as soon as may be, after the pas-
sage of this act, proceed to locate said school, and
they are hereby authorised to condemn a lot of
land, (one acre in extent,) at the most central and
convenient place, within the above mentioned
bounds or limits, upon which to erect a school
house, and contract for and superintend the erec-
tion thereof, and report their proceedings to the
Commissioners' Court of said county, to be paid for

as now provided by law; Provided, the cost of said
lot, together with erecting said house, shall not
exceed the sum of three hundred dollars.

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That so soon as the
said school house is erected, it shall be deemed and
considered a free school, and it is hereby placed on
the same footing, entitled to the same privileges
and subject to the same regulations as are now
provided by law for free schools in said county,
and the taxable inhabitants and patrons residing
within the above mentioned bounds or limits, shall
on the first Saturday in May, in the year eighteen
hundred and fifty-eight, elect three local trustees
to manage the affairs of said school, the said elec-
tion to be conducted in the manner provided by
