of its capacity to the accommodation of pauper
lunatics of the State, to be treated at the ex-
pense of the county sending such lunatic pau-
pers, the expense not to exceed one hundred
dollars for each pauper lunatic; And whereas,
the cost of supporting the said pauper lunatics
at the price of one hundred dollars each has
annually for some time imposed a debt on the
institution, amounting at the present time to
the sum of eight thousand dollars and fifty-two
cents, which it is unable to pay; And whereas,
by the opening of one of the streets of the city
of Baltimore, called Jefferson street, through
the grounds of the hospital, and by the ne-
cessity of grading and paving the same, im-
posed on the president and visitors, and the
grading of the grounds of the hospital rendered
necessary by such opening, the institution is
about to be compelled to pay a large tax and
make a cash expenditure which it is entirely
unable to meet; And whereas, some of the
streets of the city of Baltimore will, if opened,
pass through the Hospital Buildings and pre-
vent the use of the establishment for a lunatic
asylum; And whereas, such streets ought not
to be opened so long as the General Assembly
thinks proper to continue said Hospital as a
lunatic asylum, or without the consent of the
State; Therefore,

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assem-
bly of Maryland, That the sum of eight thousand
dollars and fifty-two cents be and the same is
hereby appropriated to be paid on the first of
March, eighteen hundred and fifty-eight, to the
President and Visitors of the Maryland Hospital
for the payment of the present debts of the insti-
tution, and the further sum of two thousand dol-
lars be and the same is hereby appropriated to be
be paid as aforesaid for the repairs and improve-
ment of the hospital buildings during the year
ending January the first, eighteen hundred and
fifty-nine.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That the sum of
six thousand dollars be and the same is hereby
appropriated to be paid unto said President and
Visitors after the first day of January, eighteen
