LAWS OF MARYLAND.

Rate of tolls.

SEC. 11. And be it enacted, That upon the com-
pletion of said bridge, the said president and di-
rectors shall or may keep the said bridge as a toll
bridge, with proper gates and bars to secure the
same, and are hereby authorised to ask, demand
and receive, as toll for the passage of the said
bridge, such sums as they may deem proper and
right; but not to exceed the following rates, viz.:
for every foot passenger six cents, for every horse
and rider ten cents; for cart or wagon, with one
horse, ox or mule, twenty-cents; for every cart or
wagon with two horses, oxen or. mules, twenty-
five cents; for every cart or wagon with four horses,
oxen or mules, thirty cents; for every pleasure
carriage with one horse, twenty-five cents; for every
pleasure carriage with two horses, thirty-cents ;
for four horse carriage, forty cents; for every
head of horses, mules or cattle, six cents; for
every sheep, swine, &c., three cents.

May declare
dividends.

SEC. 12. And be it enacted, That the said presi-
dent and directors, shall keep a just and true ac-
count of all monies received by their several and
respective collections of tolls for crossing said
bridge, and all other sources, and shall make and
declare a dividend of the profits and income thereof
among the stockholders, first deducting therefrom
all proper expenses or incidental charges or costs,
and such proportion of the said tolls and income
as they may deem necessary, to provide against
the decay and for repairing the said bridge, and
shall on the first Wednesday in January, in each
year, publish the dividend to be made, and also
the time and place when the same shall be paid,
and shall cause the same to be paid accordingly ;

And whereas, it may be necessary for the building
of the said bridge, that provision should be made
for condemning a quantity of land sufficient for
abutments and a toll house, as well as a road to
said bridge, if it should be located beyond the
present road, therefore it shall be lawful for the
said president and managers or a majority of them,
to agree with the owners of any land on which it
is intended to abut the said bridge and build a
toll house, or through which it may be necessary
to extend a road, for the purchase thereof, and in
case of disagreement, or in case the owner or
owners shall be a feme covert, under age, non com-
