CHAPTER 295.

AN ACT to apply to the support of Common
Schools the amount of money received on ac-
count of the interest upon the claim of the State
against the General Government, for money
advanced by the State during the late War
with England.

Passed March
9, 1858.

WHEREAS, the sum of one hundred and sixty
thousand, nine hundred and twenty-nine dol-
lars and twenty-six cents, has been received
into the Treasury from the General Govern-
ment, on account of interest upon the money
advanced by this State to the United States,
' during the late War with England, and by
Resolution number thirty-eight of December
Session eighteen hundred and twenty-five, the
said sum was set apart for the establishment
and support of Common Free Schools, There-
fore;

Preamble.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assem-
bly of Maryland, That the Treasurer of the State
be and he is hereby authorised and directed to
have invested the said sum of one hundred and
sixty thousand nine hundred and twenty-nine
dollars and twenty-six cents, in the bonds of this
State, or in his discretion in some safe and pro-
fitable stock or stocks, fund or funds, and upon
the warrant of the Comptroller, to distribute
annually the interest or dividends arising there-
from, among the several counties of the State and
the city of Baltimore, in the ratio of the whole
representation of the said counties, and city, re-
spectively, in the General Assembly, in the same
mode that the free school fund is now, or may be
hereafter distributed according to law, to the per-
son or persons duly and legally authorised to re-
ceive the same.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That so much of
the said Resolution number thirty-eight, of De-
cember Session eighteen hundred and twenty-five,
as is inconsistent with this act, be and the same
is hereby repealed.
