CHAPTER 38.

AN ACT to authorize the Mayor and City Coun-
cil of Baltimore, to issue certificates of debt, to
be denominated Water Stock.

Passed Janu-
ary 25, 1858.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assem-
bly of Maryland, That for the purpose of extend-
ing and increasing the supply of water for the
city of Baltimore, the Mayor and City Council of
Baltimore shall have authority, in the name of
said city, to issue certificates of debt to be deno-
minated "Water Stock," to an amount not ex-
ceeding one million of dollars, in addition to the
amount granted in the third section of the act,
passed May session eighteen hundred and fifty-
three, chapter three hundred and seventy-six, en-
titled, "an act for supplying the city of Baltimore
with pure water ;" said certificates to bear inter-
est not exceeding six per cent per annum, and to
provide by ordinance for the redemption of the
same, at a certain time, and under such provision
as the Mayor and City Councils may deem expe-
dient and proper.

CHAPTER 39.

Authority to
issue certifi-
cates.

AN ACT to provide for the building of a Jail in
Charles county.

ary 25, 1858.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assem-
bly of Maryland, That the county commissioners
of Charles county be and they are hereby autho-
rised and empowered to levy upon the assessable
property in said county such sum or sums of mo-
ney, which, together with the several sums now in
the hands of said commissioners, as may be neces-
sary to erect a safe and substantial jail in the vil-
lage of Port Tobacco, in said county; which said
tax when levied shall be collected as other taxes
are collected in said county.
