CHAPTER 191.

5, 1858.

AN ADDITIONAL SUPPLEMENT to the act
entitled a supplement to an act, entitled an act
for the founding a College at Chestertown.

Preamble.

WHEREAS, it is represented to this General Assem-
bly, that in some cases the Orphans' Courts
have continued to send to Washington College
youths of such tender age, and such limited
attainments, that it is impossible for them to
get through the College course within the four
years limited therefor, contrary to the true in-
tent and meaning of the provisions heretofore
made and enacted in that behalf, Therefore,

Qualifications
of youths before
entering the
College.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assem-
bly of Maryland, That the several Orphans'
Courts of the Eastern Shore, before they shall
send any youth to said College shall enquire and
ascertain that such youth is so far advanced in
his education as to ensure his fitness after one
year's study in the preparatory department of said
institution to enter the lower or Freshman Class
of said College, so that lie may pass through the
whole College course, at least in five years from
the time of his admission into the institution, and
the members of said court, respectively, shall
subscribe a certificate, in which shall be stated
their compliance with the provisions of this act,
as also of the 'provisions of said supplement, and
that such youth has the qualifications therein
mentioned.

culty to exam-
ine each youth.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That it shall be the
duty of the Faculty of said College to examine
each youth when first sent by any of the said Or-
phans' Courts, and report to the Visitors whether
they find such youth to have procured a certificate
such as is above required, and whether he has the
qualifications therein stated, and if such youth
shall be reported to be without such certificate, or
without the qualifications required to be stated,
or if at the expiration of said preparatory year,
or at any time during the same, the Faculty shall
be satisfied that such student is not, or will not
be, at the end of said year, qualified to enter the
