CHAPTER 15.

AN ACT to authorise the Preston Coal and Iron

Company, of the State of Virginia, to purchase
and hold lands and other property in the State
of Maryland, and to exercise the powers and
privileges of a corporation within the State of
Maryland, for mining and manufacturing pur-
poses.

Passed Febru-
ary 11, 1858.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assem-
bly of Maryland, That the Preston Coal and Iron
Company, of the State of Virginia, be and is
hereby authorised and empowered to purchase
and hold, lease, use, transfer, sell or otherwise
dispose of estate, real, personal or mixed, in the
county of Allegany, in the State of Maryland;

perty.

Provided, the real estate held and owned by said ,
company, in said county, shall not at any one
time, exceed two thousand acres; Provided, also,
that any real estate in said county, in which said
company may have heretofore acquired an equit-
able interest, may be lawfully conveyed to said
company as though the same were purchased after
the passage of this act.

Proviso.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That the said com-
pany be and is hereby empowered to com-
mence and prosecute the business of mining and
manufacturing in Allegany county, and shall
have and exercise all the rights and powers ne-
cessary and useful for the establishment and the
proper conduct and management of such busi-
uess.

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That for the purpose
of enabling said company to transport the pro-
duce of its mines and manufactories to market,
it shall have and is hereby vested with full right,
power and authority to make, construct and use,
keep up and preserve such rail ways, inclined
planes or tram road, and their necessary appur-
tenances, as said company may desire; commenc-
ing the same at or near said company's mine or
mines, manufactory or manufactories, and termi-
nating at such point or points on the Baltimore
and Ohio Railroad, (or as near thereto as said
company may wish, in the State of Maryland,)
