such increase or increases from the emergency fund of the County,
said payments being hereby declared to be for an emergency purpose.

SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act is hereby declared
to be an emergency measure and neceessary for the immediate preser-
vation of the public health and safety and having been passed by a
yea and nay vote, supported by three-fifths of all the members elected
to each of the two Houses of the General Assembly of Maryland, the
same shall take effect from the date of its passage.

CHAPTER 544
(House Bill 839)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 30 of
Article 17 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1951 Edition),
title "Clerks of Court", sub-title "General Duties of Clerks", pro-
viding for increase in salary for assistant clerks in Baltimore City.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 30 of Article 17 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1951 Edition), title "Clerks of Courts", sub-title "General Duties of
Clerks", be and the same is hereby repealed and re-enacted, with
amendments, to read as follows:

30. The Comptroller is hereby authorized and directed to approve
the inclusion in the annual returns required under Section 26 hereof,
of expenditures by Clerks of the Circuit Courts for the Counties and
the Clerks of the Courts of Baltimore City representing payment of
additional compensation to assistant clerks and deputies employed in
these off ices of fifteen per centum (15%) of the regular compensa-
tion authorized for such assistant clerks and deputies, provided this
authority for additional compensation shall be limited to those
assistant clerks and deputies whose regular compensation does not
exceed Three Thousand Eight Hundred Dollars ($3,800.00) per
annum; the said payment of additional compensation to become
effective July 1, 1945, and to be added to the regular compensation
at the time of payment of such regular compensation. Commencing
July 1,1955, assistant clerks of the courts of Baltimore City shall be
entitled to compensation of $500.00 in addition to their existing
annual salary.
The additional compensation herein provided for shall
not apply to the Chief Clerks of the offices of the Clerks of the
Courts of Baltimore City, for whose regular compensation appropria-
tions are made in the State Budget.

SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1955.
