nual salary of [$1,200] $1,800 and he shall also be allowed not ex-
ceeding $5,000 per year for all expenses of his office of every kind,
including automobile mileage allowance, necessary deputies and
clerical assistance; and he shall also be allowed not exceeding
[$1,200] $1,800 per year for an additional Deputy Sheriff.

SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act is hereby declared
to be an emergency measure and necessary for the immediate preser-
vation of the public health and safety and having been passed by a
yea and nay vote, supported by three-fifths of all the members elected
to each of the two Houses of the General Assembly of Maryland, the
same shall take effect from the date of its passage.

(House Bill 218)
AN ACT to repeal Section 402 of the Charter and Public Local Laws
of Baltimore City (1949 Edition), title "Baltimore City", sub-
title "Jurors", relating to the number of peremptory challenges
that the State's Attorney may have.
WHEREAS, Section 402 of the Charter and Public Local Laws of
Baltimore City (1949 Edition), title "Jurors", provides that the
State's Attorney of Baltimore City shall have the right to challenge
peremptorily any number of jurors not exceeding five, and
WHEREAS, Section 21 of Article 51 of the Annotated Code of Mary-
land (1951 Edition), title "Jurors", provides that the State shall have
the right to challenge peremptorily any number of jurors not ex-
ceeding ten, and
WHEREAS, It is the considered opinion of the State's Attorney's
office of Baltimore City that Section 402 of the Charter and Public
Local Laws of Baltimore City should be repealed because of its
conflict with Section 21 of Article 51 of the Code; now, therefore
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 402 of the Charter and Public Local Laws of Baltimore
City (1949 Edition), title "Baltimore City", sub-title "Jurors", be
and it is hereby repealed.
SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1955.
