236                               LAWS OF MARYLAND                        [CH. 159

WHEREAS, To effectuate an equitable solution to the problem the
County Commissioners of Allegany County should have authority to
investigate such matter and make such settlement of the same as the
facts may justify; now therefore

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That the County Commissioners of Allegany County be and they are
hereby authorized to make such investigation as they deem proper
of the alleged damage caused the water supply of the town of West-
ernport by the Savage River Dam and to make such settlement with
the Mayor and Commissioners of Westernport of said alleged damage
as the facts may, in the opinion of the County Commissioners, justify.
And said County Commissioners are hereby authorized to pay not
more than Fifty Thousand Dollars in settlement of any damage they
deem caused by the Savage River Dam.

SEC. 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, THAT THIS ACT
IS HEREBY DECLARED TO BE AN EMERGENCY MEASURE
AND NECESSARY FOR THE IMMEDIATE PRESERVATION OF
THE PUBLIC HEALTH AND SAFETY AND HAVING BEEN
PASSED BY A YEA AND NAY VOTE, SUPPORTED BY THREE-
FIFTHS OF ALL THE MEMBERS ELECTED TO EACH OF THE
TWO HOUSES OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY, THE SAME
SHALL TAKE EFFECT FROM THE DATE OF ITS PASSAGE.

(House Bill 473)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 257B of
Article 21 of the Code of Public Local Laws of Maryland (1930
Edition), title "Talbot County", sub-title "Fire Companies", as
said section was amended by Chapter 99 of the Acts of 1949,
increasing the amount to be levied by Talbot County for fire
companies and the amounts to be paid to certain of said companies.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 257B of Article 21 of the Code of Public Local Laws of
Maryland (1930 Edition), title "Talbot County", sub-title "Fire
Companies", as said section was amended by Chapter 99 of the Acts
of 1949, be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted, with amendments,
and to read as follows:

257B. The County Commissioners of Talbot County are hereby
authorized and directed to appropriate annually the sum of [Ten
