creasing travel allowance of Sheriff of Caroline County.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 38 (e) of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1954 Supplement), title "Sheriffs", sub-title "Compensation and
Duties", be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted, with amend-
ments, to read as follows:

38.

(e). Caroline County.—The sheriff of Caroline County shall re-
ceive an annual salary of Two Thousand four Hundred Dollars
($2,400) and shall be allowed a sum not exceeding One Dollar ($1.00)
a day for boarding and keeping each prisoner confined in the county
jail, and he shall keep a correct and full list of all prisoners com-
mitted to his custody, showing the full length of time each one is
committed and by what authority. The sheriff of Caroline County
shall also be entitled to the sum of [five] eight cents [(5c] (8$) per
mile for the use of his automobile in connection with his official
duties. He may appoint such deputies as may be necessary for the
enforcement of the duties of his office and at such compensation as
he shall fix, with the approval of the county commissioners as to
number and compensation.

SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
July 1, 1955.

CHAPTER 158
(House Bill 471)

AN ACT to authorize the County Commissioners of Allegany County
to investigate the alleged damage caused the town of Westernport
by the Savage River Dam and make such settlement thereof as they
deem proper.

WHEREAS, The Savage River Dam has been of great benefit to all
the people of Allegany County; and

WHEREAS, This dam has also aided the town of Westernport, but
at the same time it is alleged that said dam has to some extent dam-
aged the water supply of said town by increasing the sediment in
such water thus accentuating the need for filtration; and

WHEREAS, All the people of Allegany County, to the extent that
such alleged damage was caused by said dam, should bear the burden
of such alleged damage and not just the people of Westernport; and
