WHEREAS, Chapter 624 of the Acts of 1949 authorized the Supreme
Bench of Baltimore City in its discretion to direct that the offices
of the several clerks of court may be closed for the transaction of
business on Saturdays, and

WHEREAS, although there is no doubt as to the present effectiveness
of Chapter 624 of 1949, it is desirable to repeal and re-enact this
section of the Code in order to incorporate these provisions in the
Code at the same time continuing the amendment to this section
which was made by Chapter 163 of the Acts of 1953, and

WHEREAS, unless such a corrective act is passed, the omission in
the 1951 Code probably would be perpetuated in future editions
of the Code; now therefore AND WHEREAS THE PROVISIONS
OF THIS SECTION ALSO ARE TO BE EXTENDED TO CER-
TAIN OTHER COUNTIES AND THE CONDITIONS UNDER
WHICH CLERKS' OFFICES IN DESIGNATED COUNTIES MAY
BE CLOSED ARE TO BE CHANGED; NOW THEREFORE

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 8 of Article 17 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1954 Supplement), title "Clerks of Court", sub-title "General
Duties of Clerks", be and it is hereby repealed and that a new
Section 8 be and it is hereby enacted in lieu thereof, to stand in the
place and stead of the section so repealed and to read as follows:

8. Clerks to be at office every day; exceptions. Every clerk shall
attend at his office for the transaction of the business thereof every
day except Sundays and legal holidays either in person or by deputy,
unless prevented by sickness, accident or necessity, except that the

CIRCUIT COURTS OF CAROLINE, DORCHESTER,
MONTGOMERY, PRINCE GEORGE'S, WICOMICO, AND WOR-
CESTER, AND SOMERSET COUNTIES, RESPECTIVELY, MAY
AT THE DISCRETION OF ANY SUCH COURT DIRECT THAT
THE OFFICE OF THE CLERK OF COURT OF SUCH COUNTY
SHALL BE CLOSED FOR THE TRANSACTION OF BUSINESS
ON SATURDAYS. In Baltimore City, the Supreme Bench may at
its discretion direct that all offices of such clerks shall be closed for
the transaction of business on Saturdays.

SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1955.
