port and maintenance of the aforesaid Anne Onions,
to be collected as other county charges are, and paid
to the said Anne Onions or her order.

CHAPTER 40.

1812,

An act to provide for opening an alley from Holli-
day-street to North-street in the city of Balti-
more.

Passed Dec.
5, 1812.

SEC. 1. BE IT ENACTED by the General As-
sembly of Maryland, That the city commissioners of
the city of Baltimore be, and they are hereby author-
ised to lay out and open a public alley of the width
at least of sixteen feet, through the south part of the
lot of ground lately purchased by said city for public
buildings, to extend from Holliday-street, to North-
street, and to return a correct plot of the said alley
to the register of said city, to be by him preserved
as one of the city records; and thereafter the said
alley shall be, and the same is declared a public
highway.

2. AND BE IT ENACTED, That the sheriff
of Baltimore county shall, within sixty days after the
return of said plot, summon and swear a jury of
twelve disinterested freeholders, to ascertain and de-
termine who may be injured and the damages sus-
tained by the opening of said alley, & to apportion and
assess the same, on the property of those who may be
benefited thereby; and the said sheriff is hereby em-
powered to collect the same by distress or otherwise,
in sixty days after he shall have delivered an account
of such apportionment to the persons assessed there-
with; and shall pay the same as collected to the per-
sons entitled thereto.

3. AND BE IT ENACTED, That the said she-
riff shall give ten days public notice in one or more
news-papers of said city, of the time and place of
the meeting of said jury.

4. AND BE IT ENACTED, That in order to
carry this law into effect, Eleanor Dall, widow of
James Dall, and guardian to his children, who are
minors, shall be, and is hereby authorised and em-
powered, in her discretion, on behalf of the said heirs,
to sell and convey to the said city, a small lot of
ground owned by the said heirs on North-street,
and adjoining the north side of the city lot herein
before mentioned, upon the procuring of which lot,
and also of another small lot adjoining the same and
extending to Holliday-street, on the north side of
