land, for interest from first day of January, eighteen
hundred and fifty, on the balance of State tax due by
said collector, and the comptroller of the State is hereby
authorised and directed, to remit such interest in his

settlement with said sureties; Provided, however, that
all principal in arrears be first fully paid, and all costs
or commissions, if any have accrued or may accrue be-
fore final settlement.

CHAPTER 182.

Passed
Mar. 10, 1854.

AN ACT to amend the act passed at December session,
eighteen hundred and forty-seven, chapter one hun-
dred and ninety-eight, entitled an additional supple-
ment to the act, entitled an act to alter and change
the name of Elizabethtown, in Washington county,
to Hagerstown, and to incorporate the same so as to
require the Mayor of said town to give bond, before he
shall act as Mayor.

Bond to be
proven.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly
of Maryland, That from and after the passage of this
act, no mayor elect of Hagerstown, shall enter upon
the duties of said office, until he shall have executed a
bond to the State of Maryland with two sureties, to be
approved by the five councilmen of said corporation or a
majority of the same, in the penalty of five hundred
dollars, conditioned for the payment to the treasurer of
said corporation of all monies arising from fines or other
sources and belonging to said corporation.

Mayor to re-
port.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That said mayor, once
in three months, shall make report of and pay over all
monies in his hands due to said corporation, to the trea-
surer of said corporation, and upon failure to make such
statement and payment, after two notifications by the
councilmen to do so, the office of Mayor shall be de-
clared by said councilmen to be vacant, and the said,
councilmen or a majority of them, shall by appoint-
ment from themselves, fill said office for the remainder
of the term for which said mayor was elected.
