CHAPTER 531.

Passed Mar. 7,
1850.

A supplement to an act entitled, an act to establish
Public Schools in Baltimore county, passed at De-
cember session, eighteen hundred and forty-seven,
chapter one hundred and eighty-seven.

Commissioners
to be elected.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly
of Maryland, That the school commissioners appointed
under the provisions of the fifth section of said act, shall
hold office until the first Wednesday in October next, and
ten days thereafter, and on the said first Wednesday in
October next, and annually thereafter, it shall be lawful
for the people of each election district in said county, to
elect one suitable person , a resident of said district, to act as
school commissioners of said district, and the patrons of
each school shall assemble at their respective school hou-
ses, and elect three directors, whose duly it shall be to se-
lect a teacher, inspect school house, examine pupils, and
report the same to the commissioner of their district for the
space of one year after such election, and such election
shall be conducted, in all respects according to the pro-
visions of the laws regulating elections in this State, and
the judges of election, in said county, shall return the
result of said election to the board of county commis-
sioners, on the usual day for making such returns, and
the said school commissioners elected as herein provi-
ded, shall have and exercise all the powers conferred by
the said act on the commissioners heretofore appointed
by the county commissioners board.

Repealed.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That the counter signa-
ture of the board of county commissioners to the draft of
the president of the board of school commissioners, re-
quired by the tenth section of the said act, be and the
same is hereby dispensed with.

To appoint a
clerk.

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That the hoard of school
commissioners, be and they are hereby authorised to
employ the services of a clerk, not a member of the
board, and to give to said clerk such compensation for
his services, as the said board shall, from time to time,
deem right and reasonable, not to exceed the sum of
two hundred dollars per annum.

Duty of the
grand jury.

SEC. 4. And be it enacted, That the grand jury of
Baltimore county, be and they are hereby authorised
and required to examine the accounts of the said board
of school commissioners, at the time when they examine
the accounts of the treasurer and county commissioners,
and make and publish a stated account of their receipts
and expenditures, for the current year.
