CHAP. 502.

In force.

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That this act shall take
effect upon its passage, and continue in force until the
first day of January, eighteen hundred and fifty-two.

CHAPTER 502.

1850.

A supplement to an act entitled, an act to rebuild or
repair the old Jail, in Allegany County.

Commissioners
to procure land
and erect jail.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That the commissioners, or a majority of
them, named in the act to which this is a supplement,
are hereby authorised and empowered to receive by do-
nation or to purchase a lot or lots of ground, in the town
of Cumberland, or me vicinity thereof, and to erect
thereon a jail, the said lot of ground so given or pur-
chased, to be conveyed to the said commissioners for the
use of Allegany county, and the said commissioners, or
a majority of them, are hereby authorised to pay for the
said lot or lots of ground, if the same shall be obtained
by purchase, out of any monies which may come into
their hands, for the purpose of building the said new
jail.

Authority to
levy.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That the commission-
ers of Allegany county, be and they are hereby empow-
ered and directed to impose annually on the assessable
properly of the said county, the sum of two thousand
dollars, to be assessed together with an allowance to the
collector, the same commission for collection, that he re-
ceives for collecting the other county levy, which sum
so assessed, shall be collected by the collector of Alle-
gany county, as other county taxes are collected, and
when so collected, shall by the said collector be paid to
the said commissioners appointed by this act, or a majo-
rity of them, to be applied by them towards erecting the
said jail, which said sum of two thousand dollars, shall
be annually imposed, by the said county commissioners,
on the assessable properly of the said county, to be as-
sessed, collected, paid and applied as aforesaid, until the
requisite amount of money be collected for the comple-
tion of the said jail; provided, the whole sum required
shall not exceed six thousand dollars.

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That the said commis-
sioners, or a majority of them, shall be and they are
hereby empowered to borrow, from time to time, such
