provided, that if any person or persons, or his, her or
their representatives, against whom any such fees, taxes
or levies may have been rendered, will make oath or
affirmation, before a justice of the peace, that the same
has been satisfied or paid, that this act shall not extend
to such cases; provided also, that the powers conferred
by this act, shall not continue in force longer than the
first day of January, eighteen hundred and fifty-two.

An act for the benefit of the wife and children of
Isaac Dowries, a deceased colored man, of Caroline
County.
|

WHEREAS, it is represented to this General Assembly,
That a certain Isaac Downes, colored man, of Caroline
county, departed this life, some years ago, leaving real
property, namely: a house and lot, consisting of two or
three acres, and leaving a wife and children, who under
the laws of this State, are incompetent to inherit the
same — Therefore,

Preamble.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly
of Maryland, That the wife and children of the said
Isaac Downes, be and the same are hereby made capa-
ble of taking the said property, subject to the provisions
of the act regulating descents, in this State.
|

|
SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That nothing
in said act, regulating descents in this State, or any other
acts which incapacitates free negroes from inheritants,
shall apply the wife and children of the said Isaac
Downes.
