LAWS OF MARYLAND.

CHAP. 431.

Wiesmiller, George Puhl, Gottleib Vetter, George Pep-
pler, L. Waitner, George Stumpf, A. Frisch, J. Andrew
Hacher, P. Heinz, Henry Vey, and John C. Ernold,
the officers and members of the Metamora Tribe, num-
ber one, of the Independent Order of Red Men, of the
State of Maryland, and their successors, be and they are
hereby declared to be a community, corporation and
body politic, by name, style and title of the Metamora
Tribe, number one,of the Independent. Order of Red Men,
of the State of Maryland, and by that, name, they and
their successors, shall and may be capable in law to have
receive and retain to them, and their successors, properly,
real and personal, and also clevises and bequests of any
person or persons, bodies corporate or politic, capable of
making the same, and the same, at their pleasure, to
transfer or dispose of in such manner as they shall think

Proviso.

proper; provided always, that the said corporation or
body corporate, shall not at any time hold or possess
property, real, personal or mixed, exceeding in value the
sum of fifteen thousand dollars.

Objects of cor-
poration.

SEC. 7. And be it enacted, That the said corpora-
tion, and their successors, by the name and title afore-
said, shall be capable in law to sue and be sued, plead
and be impleaded, answer and be answered unto, de-
fend be and defended, in all or any courts of law and
equity, and before all or any judges, officers or persons
whatsoever, in all and singular actions, matters or de-
mands whatsoever.

Common seal.

SEC. 8. And be it enacted, That it shall and may be
lawful for the said corporation to have a common seal
for their use, and the same at their will and pleasure to
change, alter or make anew, from time to time, as they
shall think best, and shall in general have and exercise
all such rights, privileges and immunities as by law are
incident, or necessary to corporations, and what may be
necessary to the corporation herein constituted, and to
enable the members of said order to exercise all things
concerning the design of this corporation, for the benevo-
lent relief of the sick and distressed, and for the promo-
tion of their purposes generally.

Subject to in-
spection.

SEC. 9. And be it enacted, That it shall and may be
lawful, at any time, for the General Assembly to de-
mand a statement of the amount of the property, real
and personal, belonging to said corporation, and if the
debts due to and from said corporation, and the purposes
for which disbursements shall have been made, and
shall also have the right to authorise one or more per-
sons to inspect such general accounts, in the books of
the corporation, as shall relate to such statements.
