as aforesaid, they are hereby authorised to employ
some competent surveyor for the same, who shall he
allowed such compensation, as the commissioners of
tax for Saint Mary's county, shall deem adequate for
his services.

CHAPTER 427.

CHAP. 427.

An act entitled, an act to elect a Treasurer of Howard
District by the people, and for the, more prompt and
economical collection of the State and District Taxes
in said District.

Passed Mar. 4,
1850.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly
of Maryland, That the legal voters of Howard Dis-
trict of Anne Arundel county, shall and are hereby
authorised and empowered, at the next general elec-
tion to be held in said district, and every third year
thereafter, to elect, by ballot, a treasurer for said dis-
trict, who shall act as clerk to the commissioners of
said district, for three years next succeeding his elec-
tion, and receive, as compensation for his services as
treasurer and clerk, such sums as the commissioners
of Howard District may deem reasonable and right,
not exceeding five hundred dollars per annum.

To be elected
by the people.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That the said treasurer
and clerk, before he proceeds to act as such, shall take

an oath in due form of law, faithfully to perform the
duties devolving upon him as such treasurer and clerk,
and in addition, the said treasurer shall enter into a
good and sufficient bond and security, to be approved
by the commissioners of Howard District, for the
faithful performance of his duties as treasurer, in a
penalty not less in any case, than the amount of the
annual levy for the term for which he may be elected.

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That the office in the:
Court House of Howard District, now assigned to the
use of the commissioners of said district, shall be the
office, of the said treasurer and clerk, and shall be by
him kept open for the transaction of business, from
nine o'clock in the morning, until three, each day,
Sunday excepted.

SEC. 4. And be it enacted, That in cases of death
or resignation of the said treasurer, at any time during
the term for which he shall have been elected to
