CHAP. 235.

How elected.

SEC. 6. And be it enacted, That it may and shall be
lawful for the mayor and councilman of the town of
Cumberland, to appoint three judges of election, the
said judges to have the power to appoint clerks, and
conduct the said election in all respects, as elections
are now conducted in this State, for delegates to the
General Assembly of Maryland, opening the polls at
nine o'clock in the morning, and closing them at six
o'clock in the evening; that said judges and clerks of
election shall receive the same compensation as judges
and clerks of election in Allegany county receive, to
be paid out of the funds of the corporation.

Times of meet-
ing regulated.

SEC. 7. And be it enacted, That the mayor and
councilmen shall hereafter meet at the council cham-
ber on the first Monday of June, in each year, instead
of the court house, as now required by law, for the
purpose of sitting two days, or longer if necessary, to
hear and determine the complaints and appeals of per-
sons feeling themselves aggrieved by their property
being over valued by the assessor, and that it shall be
the duty of the clerk to the corporation to give public
notice to the citizens of the town, in such manner as
the council shall prescribe, of the time, place, and ob-
ject of the said meeting of the said mayor and coun-
cilmen, on the said first Monday of June, to hear and
determine appeals as aforesaid.

To cause an-
nual assessment
to be made.

SEC. 8. And be it enacted, That it shall be the duly
of the mayor and councilmen of said town, in addition
to the real and personal property now assessed and
taxed, to cause the assessor of said town annually to
assess and value all goods, merchandize, and stock of
trade of each and every person residing in, or owning
such goods, merchandize, or stock of trade in said cor-
poration, and that the same shall be assessed and taxed
as all property in said corporation.

What property
to be taxed.

SEC. 9. And be it enacted, That all property within
the limits of the town, as established by the act of
December session, eighteen hundred and thirty-nine,
shall be liable to assessment and taxation, in like man-
ner with other property in said town.

Inconsistent
acts repealed.

SEC. 10. And be it enacted, That all acts or parts of
acts, inconsistent with this act, be and the same are
hereby repealed.

Act to be
published.

SEC. 11. And be it enacted, That the clerk to the
corporation of Cumberland shall have this act pub-
lished three times in all the newspapers printed in
Cumberland, for three successive weeks prior to the
first day of May next, to be paid for out of the funds
of the corporation, a copy of this act to be furnished
