pointed either by death, resignation or otherwise, it shall
be the duty of the board to fill up the same as soon as
conveniently may be.

CHAP. 187.

SEC. 6. And be it enacted, That the said board of
school commissioners shall be convened by the county
commissioners within twenty days next succeeding
their appointment, and at their first meeting, or at some
subsequent meeting held by special adjournment, shall
proceed to the election of a president, treasurer and se-
cretary from their own board, to be chosen by a majo-
rity of votes of the whole board, and said president,
treasurer and secretary shall hold their offices during
the period prescribed by the fifth section of this act, and
if any vacancy shall occur either in the office of presi-
dent, treasurer or secretary, from death, resignation or
legal disability, it shall be duty of the board to fill up
the same at the earliest day practicable by a new elec-
tion, and in all cases any four of the school commission-
ers shall constitute a quorum for the transaction of bu-
siness.

SEC. 7. And be it enacted, That the said board of
school commissioners shall have power to establish as
many schools in the county as the school fund may be
adequate to support, and in such situations as the public
convenience may require, and to provide suitable rooms
for their accommodation, to employ teachers and fix
their salaries, to prescribe the course of study and books
to be used, to make all such bye-laws for their own go-
vernment, and rules and regulations for the management of
the schools, not inconsistent with the laws of this State,
as they may deem expedient, and the same to modify
and repeal at their pleasure.

SEC. 8. And be it enacted, That the said board of
school commissioners be and they are hereby authoris-
ed to establish such grades of public schools, and in such
proportion as to the number of each grade as they may
deem best to subserve the public interest.

SEC. 9. And be it enacted, That it shall be the duty
of the board of school commissioners to furnish all such
necessary books and stationary for the pupils of the said
school, and in general whatever fuel or other supplies
the school may require, to be paid for from the public
school funds, and each pupil shall pay in advance a
sum not exceeding one dollar per quarter, and the same
advance of payment for each quarter shall be required
during the continuance of such pupil in the schools, un-
less exempted therefrom by the board.
