Historical Society, all such original papers, documents
and records, connected with the early history of this
State and with the history of the Revolution, and the
period preceding the same, as may serve to illustrate the
annals of Maryland, its original settlement, and subse-
quent progress, to the close of the Revolutionary War,
and which may not be necessary to the due and ordinary
administration of the public affairs of the State, and that
he be empowered to make such selection from the said
records, documents and papers, in the execution of the au-
thority hereby conferred upon him, as he may believe to be
of historical interest, and not necessary to be kept at the

seat ot government, and to direct the transfer of the same
to the Maryland Historical Society; provided, that the
Governor, in making this selection as aforesaid, shall
confine his choice to such records, documents or other
papers, as may exist in duplicate, and to such also as
shall be found in a condition of apparent or manifest
decay, or partially obliterated from defective preserva-
tion, or in detached fragments, parcels, bundles, single
documents or letters in a state of disorder and disarrange-
ment, and which from the condition in which he may find
them, he may believe may be advantageously deposited
with the said Historical Society for the better preser-
vation of the same; and provided further, that the said
Historical Society shall hold and preserve the same in a
safe place of depost, in a fire proof chamber, and shall
keep the same in good condition for the use and benefit of
the State, as a depository thereof, and that the said docu-
ments, records and papers, shall be returned to the Ex-
ecutive of the State on or before the first day of January,
eighteen hundred and forty-nine; and provided also, that
the Governor, or such person as the General Assembly
may appoint, shall at all times, during the continuance of
said records with said society, be empowered to visit
and inspect the condition of said records, documents and
other papers, and to report the condition thereof to the
General Assembly, for such order in reference to the
same as they may think necessary; and provided also,
that said society shall arrange and collate said papers
during their continuance with it.
Further resolved, That the Governor be authorised
and empowered to deposit with the said Historical So-
ciety a complete copy of the laws of this State, so far as
the same are published, and may be found in the possession
of the State, in sufficient number of extra copies to be
thus appropriated without detriment or inconvenience to
the several departments of the public service.
