CHAP. 346.

CHAPTER 345.

10, 1846.

An act to fix and ascertain the pay of the Notary Pub-
lic at Easton.

Preamble.

WHEREAS, it has been represented to this General
Assembly, by the petition in writing of William Newman,
Notary Republic at Easton, and other respectable citi-
zens of Talbot County, that the pay and emolument of
the said notary republic are insufficient to afford him
even a moderate support, and the revenue derived to the
State from this source very inconsiderable, and as it is
important that the compensation should be such as to in-
duce a competent person to undertake the duties of this
office; and it cannot be supposed that such person can be
obtained, when the pay and perquisites will not afford
even a moderate and economical living; therefore.

Tax released

and removed.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That from and after the first day of June last
past, the tax of the State of Maryland, arising from the
cost of protest, made by the aforesaid officer, be and the
same is hereby released and removed.

Allowed $250.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That from and after the
day aforesaid and for the current year, and for each and
every year hereafter from the day aforesaid, the said no-
tary shall be and he is hereby allowed to reserve for his
own use and benefit, out of the cost of protest aforesaid,
the sum of two hundred and fifty dollars.

Notary to pay
over.

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That should the cost of pro-
test as now established at the rate of two dollars, in each
and every case, in any one year exceed the said sum of
two hundred and fifty dollars, then and in that case, it is-
hereby required that the said notary shall pay over such
excess to the treasurer of Maryland, as he is now directed
to pay over one dollar in every case of protest.

CHAPTER 346.

10, 1846.

An act to extend the Lien of Mechanics, and others, upon
buildings, passed in eighteen hundred and thirty-nine,
chapter two hundred and five, and the supplements
thereto, to Prince George's and Anne Arundel Coun-
ties, and to Howard District.

Act Extended.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That the provisions of the act passed in eighteen hundred
