1545.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That the said corporation
shall be capable of taking and holding real and personal
estate, not exceeding in value the sum of four thousand
dollars, which estate shall never be divided among the
members of the corporation, but shall descend to their
successors, for the benevolent relief of the sick and dis-
tressed, the education of the orphans of its members, and
for the promotion of those purposes generally.

CHAP. 279.

May hold real

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That this corporation shall
have power to alter and amend their by-laws, at pleasure
provided, they do not conflict with the laws of the State;
of Maryland, the laws of the United States, or the laws
of the Grand Lodge.

Proviso.

SEC. 4. And be it enacted, That nothing in this act
shall be so taken or construed as to allow this corpora-
tion to issue any note, token, scrip or device, to be used
as a currency.

Issues forbid.

SEC. 5. And be it enacted, That this act of incorpo-
ration shall enure for thirty years from its passage, and
that the legislature reserves to itself the right to alter and
amend this act of incorporation at pleasure.

An act to incorporate the Laurel Manufacturing Com-
pany.

26, 1846.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That Horace Capron, Osmond C. Tiffany,
William E. Mayhew, Benjamin C. Ward and Stephen B.
Heath, be and they are hereby made and constituted a
body corporate and politic, by the name of the Laurel
Manufacturing Company, and as such shall have succes-
sion, and may sue and be sued, plead and be impleaded
in any court of law or equity, and may have and use a
common seal, and the same may change and alter at plea-
sure, and shall have and exercise all the powers, rights
and privileges which are necessary and proper for man-
ufacturing cotton, iron and other articles, and vending the
same; and for the aforesaid purposes, may purchase,
hold and use lands, not exceeding five hundred acres in
quantity, and erect thereon such buildings and improve-
ments as may be deemed necessary or expedient.
