CHAPTER S7.

Passed Feb.
14, 1845.

An act for the relief of Alexander Smith, of the City of
Baltimore.

Authorised to
bring slaves
into this State.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Alexander Smith, of the city of Baltimore, be and
he is hereby authorised to introduce into this State, and
hold as slaves, two negro men from Fauquier county,

Provisoes.

Virginia; provided, the said Alexander Smith within thirty
days from the passage of this law, shall file with the clerk
of Baltimore county, a description of such slaves, stating
their ages with an affidavit thereto annexed, stating that
the same is a true and faithful description of such negroes,
and that they are not removed into this State for the pur-
pose of sale, and they are slaves for life; and provided
also, the said Alexander Smith shall pay over to the clerk
of Baltimore county court, the tax required to be paid to
the Colonization Society of the State, by the act of eigh-
teen hundred and thirty-three, chapter eighty-seven,

CHAPTER 88.

12, 1845.

An act to allow Charles G. Haslup, further time to com-

plete his collections.

Authorised to
collect.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That Charles G. Haslup, collector of the first
collection district of Howard District, of Anne Arundel
county, be and he is hereby authorised and empowered
to collect any taxes or balances of taxes now remaining
due to, and uncollected by him in the district aforesaid,
in the same manner and with the same power and privi-
leges, as are allowed by the existing laws in said cases
made and provided.

vit.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That the aforementioned
Charles G. Haslup, shall in every instance before he may
proceed to the aforesaid collection, make affidavit before
some justice of the peace of said district, that the same
remain unpaid, and that he hath not received any security,
or satisfaction for the same, or any part thereof, more than

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That this act shall not con-
tinue in force longer than one year from the date of the
