persons in charge of vessels, navigating the Pocomoke ri-
ver, and passing Stephen's ferry to give notice of their ap-
proach thereto, if ascending the river by blowing a horn
at the steam mill below, and if descending at the steam
mill above.

CHAP. 157

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That if any damage shall
be sustained by the said ferry by reason of a non-compli-
ance with the requisition of the aforesaid section, the own-
er of the vessel doing the damage shall pay double the
amount of the damage sustained—to be recovered in the
name of the person employed to keep said ferry, before
any justice of the peace of the county in which said own-
er resides—and shall be accounted for to the commission-
ers of Somerset and Worcester counties.

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That after the first day of
January next, the said ferry shall be kept open at all sea-
sons of the year, from sunrise until nine o'clock P. M. for
the accommodation of the public.

SEC. 4. And be it enacted, That non-resident tax pay-
ers of Somerset and Worcester counties, shall be entitled
to pass said ferry free of charge, in the same manner as the
citizens of said counties.

An act in relation to the United States Road.

Passed March
3, 1845.

WHEREAS, it is represented to this General Assembly,
by the memorial of sundry citizens of Allegany county,
that the late superintendent of the United Slates road, has
grossly mismanaged the affairs of said road; AND WHERE-

AS both the accusers and the accused demand an investiga-
tion—Therefore,

Preamble.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That the commissioners of Allegany county,
be and they are hereby directed to appoint three disinter-
ested persons, to examine into the accounts and general
management of the late superintendent of the United
States road, with power to summon and examine witnes-
ses, and that they make report to the said commissioners.

SEC. 2. Be it enacted, That in case the charges are
sustained the aforesaid commissioners of the county, are
hereby directed to institute such legal or other proceed-
ings, as the circumstances of the case and interest of the
