and Punishments", sub-title "Sabbath Breaking", said
new section to be know as Section 597A and to follow
immediately after Section 597 thereof, allowing Sunday
movies in Havre de Grace under certain conditions and
providing for a referendum thereon.
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That a new section be and it is hereby added to
Article 27 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1951 Edi-
tion), title "Crimes and Punishments", sub-title "Sabbath
Breaking", said new section to be known as Section 597A,
to follow immediately after Section 597 of said Article, and
to read as follows:
597A. Nothing contained in Section 578 of this Article
shall be construed to prohibit or make unlawful the ex-
hibition of Motion Pictures within the limits of the in-
corporated City of Havre de Grace, Harford County, after
the hours of 2 P. M. on the first day of the week, commonly
called "Sunday", whether the same be exhibited with or
without a charge or admission fee; provided, however, that
it shall be unlawful for any person or persons to permit
any child twelve years of age or younger, to attend the
exhibition of Motion Pictures within said areas, at any time
on Sundays, unless accompanied by an adult member of the
family; and it shall be unlawful for any person or persons
to exhibit Motion Pictures in said areas before 2 P. M. on
Sundays. The work or employment of any operator, ticket
seller, or other employee, or attendant, in connection with
such exhibition, shall not be unlawful because performed on
Sunday, within the limits and boundaries of said incorpo-
rated City of Havre de Grace, Harford County.
SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That BEFORE THIS
ACT SHALL BECOME EFFECTIVE at the next regular
municipal election in May, 1953, in said City, the Board
of Election Supervisors of the City of Havre de Grace shall
also print on the ELECTION BALLOT OR voting machine
ballot for said election the following: "Shall Motion Pic-
tures be exhibited in the City of Havre de Grace on Sun-
days?" after which shall be printed on separate lines in a
square or box to the right of and opposite, the words:
"For Sunday Motion Pictures", and a corresponding square
or box to the right of and opposite, the words: "Against
Sunday Motion Pictures"; the same to be printed on said
ELECTION BALLOTS OR voting machine ballots so as
to give the voters a clear opportunity to designate by a
cross (X) in a square or box opposite each of said groups
of words, his answer to said questions.
