of the term of the present County Treasurer unless a
vacancy in said office occurs before the expiration of the

present term, at which time all the provisions of this Act
shall become effective, it being the intention of the General
Assembly that the provisions of this Act shall apply to
the successor to the present County Treasurer of Wicomico
County.

CHAPTER 413
(Senate Bill 193)

AN ACT to add a new section to Article 27 of the Anno-
tated Code of Maryland (1951 Edition), title "Crimes
and Punishments", said section to be known as Section
627A, to follow immediately after Section 627 thereof
and to be under the new sub-title "Taxicabs", making
it a criminal offense wilfully to refuse or neglect to pay
the proper charge due for transportation in any taxicab
or other common carrier and provide penalties therefor,
and providing that this section should apply only in
certain counties.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That a new section be added to Article 27 of the Anno-
tated Code of Maryland (1951 Edition), title "Crimes and
Punishments", said section to be known as Section 627A,
to follow immediately after Section 627 thereof and to be
under the new sub-title "Taxicabs", and to read as follows:

TAXICABS

627A. Any person who engages and accepts transporta-
tion in public taxicab or other vehicle operated as a common
carrier, under any conditions whereby the charge there-
fore is not paid in advance, and who wilfully refuses to
pay the proper charges at the conclusion of such transpor-
tation, shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor, and upon
conviction thereof shall be subject to a fine of not more
