700 LAWS OF MARYLAND [CH. 372

WHEREAS, There is urgent need for ambulance, rescue
and life saving service in the First Election District of
Anne Arundel County due to the large number of beaches
and waterfront communities in the said District and due
to the many heavily traveled highways passing through
the said District, resulting in many calls for ambulance
and rescue service; now therefore

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland,
That a new section be and it is hereby added to
the Code of Public Local Laws of Anne Arundel County
(1947 Edition), being Article 2 of the Code of Public Local
Laws of Maryland (1930 Edition), title "Anne Arundel
County," sub-title "Ambulance and Rescue Companies,"
said new section to be known as Section 162, to immediately
precede Section 163 of said Code and to read as follows:

162. (a) The provisions of this section shall only apply
to and be effective in the First Election District of Anne
Arundel County.

(b) The County Commissioners of Anne Arundel County
are hereby authorized and directed to levy for the year
1955 and annually thereafter a special tax of not more
than two cents (2¢) on every One Hundred Dollars
($100.00) of the assessed value of all real and personal
property located in the First Election District of Anne
Arundel County.

(c) The said special tax shall be levied and collected in the
same manner as other State and County taxes are now
levied and collected.

(d) The proceeds of the said special tax shall be paid by
the County Commissioners semi-annually on June SO and
December 31 of each year to those Volunteer Fire Depart-
ments located in the First Election District of Anne
Arundel County which have been organized and operate
under the approval of the Board of Fire Commissioners
of Anne Arundel County, and which operate a Volunteer
Ambulance and Rescue Service.

(e) The funds received by the respective Volunteer Fire
Companies qualified to receive the proceeds of the said
special tax shall be used for the purposes of purchasing,
repairing, replacing, operating, maintaining and housing,
ambulances and rescue and life saving equipment and for
insuring itself and its personnel against any claims for
for damages resulting from public liability, property
damage and/or personal injury.
