1056 LAWS OF MARYLAND [CH. 562

Chief Clerk, who shall be paid for his services as such, the
sum of [$1, 500] $1, 900 per annum, an Assistant Chief
Clerk at a salary of [$1, 200] $1, 600 per annum, two Regis-
trars who shall constitute the Permanent Board of Registry
at a salary of [$3, 600] $4, 000 each per annum, and each
member of the Permanent Board of Registry shall be paid
the further sum of $600 per annum for the expenses inci-
dent to the operation of their automobiles, and shall em-
ploy and appoint a stenographer at a salary of [$2, 640]
$3, 000 per annum, four clerks at a salary of [$2, 400]
$2, 780 each per annum, two clerks at a salary of [$2, 040]
$2, 660 each per annum, and shall from time to time employ
and appoint such permanent or temporary clerks as may be
necessary for the proper transaction of the business of the
office, and at such compensation as may be fixed by the
Board of Supervisors of Elections. The Supervisors of
Elections of Montgomery County shall also employ and ap-
point a Custodian of Voting Machines, and one Deputy
Custodian, whose duty it shall be to prepare the machines
to be used in the elections to be held therein, and the Deputy
Custodian appointed by the Supervisors shall belong to the
other leading party from that to which the Custodian shall
belong. Such Custodian and Deputy Custodian shall, under
the direction of said Board, have charge of and represent
the said Board during the preparation of the said voting
machines, and perform such other duties as may be pre-
scribed from time to time by the Board of Supervisors of
Elections. Such Custodian and Deputy Custodian shall,
each be paid the sum of $10. 00 per diem for each day they
are engaged in the preparation, repair or maintenance of
said voting machines and they shall each be paid the actual
expenses incident to the operation of their automobiles in
the performance of their duties as may be approved by the
[Board of] County Council. Each Custodian shall take
the Constitutional oath of office, which shall be filed with
the said [Board] County Council. All such salaries in
Montgomery County shall be established in the annual
appropriation resolution and levy in Montgomery County,
except that they may not be less than as specified as here-
inabove in this section.
The [Board of] County Council of
Montgomery County are hereby authorized and directed to
pay all salaries and other expenses provided for in this
section.

SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall
take effect June 1, 1953.
