288 JOINT RESOLUTIONS

WHEREAS, Such mine water, draining the anthracite coal
fields of Pennsylvania, would contain large volumes of sul-
phuric acid; and

WHEREAS, Such sulphuric acid-laden mine water would be
extremely destructive to the marine and plant life of the
Chesapeake Bay, which is Maryland's greatest natural re-
source; and

WHEREAS, The people of Maryland are wholeheartedly
opposed to using the Chesapeake Bay as a dumping-ground
for polluted water from neighboring states; now therefore
be it

Resolved by the General Assembly of Maryland, That this
Body expresses its firm and vigorous opposition to the plan
of the Federal Government to pump sulphuric acid laden
mine water from Pennsylvania into the Chesapeake Bay
and strongly urges the United States Bureau of Mines to
reconsider their action and not approve of such dumping
of mine water into the Bay; and be it further

Resolved, That the Secretary of State transmit copies
of this Resolution, under the Great Seal of the State, to the
members of the Maryland Delegation in the Congress of
the United States and to the United States Bureau of
Mines.
