CHAPTER 275
(House Bill 309)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Sub-sec-
tion 37B (u) of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Mary-
land (1947 Supplement), title "Sheriffs", sub-title "Com-
pensation", providing for the expense and automobile allow-
ance for the Sheriff of Washington County and for the mini-
mum salaries of the several Deputies and Assistants of the
Sheriff of Washington County.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land,
That Sub-section 37B (u) of Article 87 of the Annotated
Code of Maryland (1947 Supplement), title "Sheriffs", sub-title
"Compensation", be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted,
with amendments, to read as follows:

37B.

(u) The Sheriff of Washington County shall receive an
annual salary of $3, 000 plus $1, 200 for expenses and [$300]
$600 a year for the Sheriff's automobile to be used by him in
the performance of his duties. He may appoint an office
Deputy at an annual salary to be set by the County Commis-
sioners of Washington County
[of $2, 100]; and two Deputies
who shall each receive an annual salary of [$2, 100] at least
$2, 400
and [$25] $50 per month each for the use of their
automobiles; one secretary who shall receive an annual salary
of [$1, 500] $1, 800; [two jail wardens who shall receive an
annual salary of $1, 800] a chief warden of the jail, who shall
receive an annual salary of at least $2, 400; an assistant
war-
den who shall receive an annual salary of at least $2, 100; an
attorney to the sheriff who shall receive annual compensation
in the
amount of $600; and a cook who shall receive [not more
than $100 per month] at least $1, 800 per year. Sheriff may ap-
point such additional Special Deputies as he may deem neces-
sary with the approval of the County Commissioners as to
number and compensation. The salaries specified hereinabove
in this sub-section, except as to the sheriff, shall be
deemed to
be
minimum salaries and may be increased from time to time
by the County Commissioners of Washington County.

SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That the compensation
and expense and travel allowances provided for hereinabove in
