Dollars ($1, 200. 00) plus all fees and costs allowed by law for
all services performed by him in civil and criminal cases, and
the County Commissioners of Allegany County may increase
the compensation of said constables or appoint additional
constables at large for trial magistrates in said county and
provide for the compensation of such constables either by the
fees prescribed by law or by such annual salary in lieu of fees,
as the County Commissioners, in their discretion, may deter-
mine; provided, however, that the provisions of this section
shall not apply to the counties of Carroll, Frederick, Mont-
gomery, Wicomico, Prince George's, Harford, Cecil and Cal-
vert, and in Anne Arundel the County Commissioners may
appoint two constables at salaries of not more than Six Hun-
dred Dollars ($600. 00) per year. [In Frederick County, the
County Commissioners may appoint one constable at large who
shall receive, in lieu of fees in civil and criminal cases, an
annual salary of $1, 800. 00 plus the actual cost, but not exceed-
ing $600. 00 per year, for the operation of an automobile in the
performance of his duties. ]

37B.

(j) The Sheriff of Frederick County shall receive an annual
salary of $4, 000, in addition to lodging furnished him and his
family AND SHALL BE ALLOWED $300. 00 FOR ANNUAL
DEPRECIATION OF HIS AUTOMOBILE. He shall appoint
[three] four deputies who shall each receive not less than
$2, 400 per year, EACH OF WHOM SHALL BE ALLOWED
$300. 00 FOR THE ANNUAL DEPRECIATION OF THEIR
AUTOMOBILES, and as many jail wardens as may be neces-
sary, not to exceed three (3), at an annual salary of not less
than $1, 320 each. The Sheriff may appoint such additional
special deputies as he may deem necessary, with the approval
of the County Commissioners, as to number and compensation.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That the present Con-

stable at large of Frederick County shall perform the duties
of the additional deputy sheriff provided for by the pro-
visions of this Act during the remainder of his term as
constable, after which time, and not before, the additional
deputy sheriff provided for by this Act shall be appointed
in accordance with the provisions of this Act.

SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That a new sub-section be
and it is hereby added to Section 29 of Article 36 of the Anno-
tated Code of Maryland (1947 Supplement), title "Fees of
Officers, " sub-title "Sheriffs, " said new sub-section to be known
as Sub-section (c) and to follow immediately after Sub-section
(b) of said Section and Article, and to read as follows:
