1134 LAWS OF MARYLAND [CH. 382

being Article 1A of the Code of Public Local Laws of Mary-
land, title 'City of Cumberland", sub-title "Civil Service—
Police and Fire", revising the salary schedule PROVID-
ING ADDITIONAL COMPENSATION for the members
of the Police Department of the City of Cumberland.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land,
That Section 57 of the Charter of the City of Cumber-
land (1950 Edition), being Article 1A of the Code of Public
Local Laws of Maryland, title "City of Cumberland", sub-title
"Civil Service—Police and Fire", be and it is hereby repealed
and re-enacted, with amendments, to read as follows:

57. The base or grade salary of the members of the Police
Department of the City of Cumberland shall be as follows:

[The Chief of Police shall receive $298. 00 per month; the
Assistant Chief of Police shall receive $262. 00 per month; the
Lieutenant of Police shall receive $238. 00 per month; each
Sergeant shall receive $225. 00 per month; each Patrolman
and Detective shall receive $190. 00 per month during the first
year of service and $220. 00 per month for each month there-
after. No member of the Police Department shall receive less
than |220. 00 per month after one year of service. ] The Chief
of Police shall receive $80. 00 per week; the Assistant Chief-

of Police shall receive $75. 00 per week; each Lieutenant of

Police shall receive $72. 50 per week; each Sergeant shall

receive $70. 00 per week; the Detective in charge shall re-

ceive $68. 50 per week; each Patrolman and Detective shall

receive $65. 00 per week; each Probationer shall receive

$57. 00 per week during the period of his probation, which

shall be twelve months. The aforegoing salaries shall be

paid bi-weekly. REGARDLESS OF THE FIGURES SPECI-
FIED HEREINABOVE IN THIS SECTION, EVERY SUCH
MEMBER OF THE POLICE DEPARTMENT SHALL RE-
CEIVE A SUPPLEMENTARY PAYMENT OF $12. 00 EACH
MONTH OVER AND ABOVE THE AMOUNT BEING RE-
CEIVED FOR HIS CLASSIFICATION AS OF MARCH 1,
1951. THE COMPENSATION BEING PAID FOR EACH
SUCH CLASSIFICATION AS OF MARCH 1, 1951, PLUS
THE SUM OF $12. 00 EACH MONTH SHALL FROM AND
AFTER JULY 1, 1951, BE THE MINIMUM SALARY OR
COMPENSATION TO BE PAID FOR EACH SUCH
CLASSIFICATION RESPECTIVELY.

It shall be the duty of the Commissioner of Police and Fire
of Cumberland to estimate annually the sum of money neces-
sary for the salaries as herein prescribed, and he shall certify
the same to the Mayor and City Council, who are hereby
