CHAPTER 252.

An act entitled an act to change the name of Somerset
Young Parran, of Calvert County, to that of Charles
Somerset Parran.

1840.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That from and after the passage of this act, the name of
Somerset Young Parran, of Calvert county, is and the
same is hereby changed to that of Charles Somerset Par-
ran.

CHAPTER 253.

Name changed.

An act to authorise Kitty Turner, of the District of Co-
lumbia, to bring into this State, certain Negroes, slaves
for life.

Passed Mar. 10,
1840.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,

That Kitty Turner, of the District of Columbia, be
and she is hereby authorised to bring into this State
the following negroes, slaves for life, the property of the
said Kitty Turner, to wit: Washington, Frederick Mason,
John, Caroline, Maria, Ann and Betsy; provided, that the
said Kitty Turner shall within thirty days after the remo-
val of said slaves, or either of them, into this State, file
with the clerk of the county into which said slave or
slaves is or are brought, a list or lists of the said slave or
slaves so removed, stating their ages, with an affidavit
thereto attached, that the same is a true and faithful list or
lists of the said slave or slaves so removed, and that the said
Kitty Turner hath not removed the said slave or slaves into
this State for the purpose of sale, and that each of said ne-
groes is a slave for life; provided also, that the sum of fifteen
dollars for each slave between the age of twelve and forty-
five years, and that the sum of five dollars for each slave
above the age of forty-five and under twelve years of age,
so brought into this State, shall be paid to the clerk of the
county court at the time of giving such list, to be paid
over by him to the treasurer of the Western Shore for the
use and benefit of the colonization society of the State.
