WILLIAM GRASON, ESQUIRE, GOVERNOR.

1839.

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That the corporation here-

by created, shall not issue or put in circulation, or cause to

be issued or put in circulation, any bill, note, check, device
or evidence of debt whatsoever, to be used as currency
or money; and that the General Assembly hereby reserves
the right at any lime to repeal, alter or amend this charter
when the same shall be deemed advisable.

Banking forbid.

An act to incorporate the Directors of the Boole Concern of
the Methodist Protestant Church.

Passed Jan. 30,
1840.

WHEREAS, sundry persons, hereinafter named, have
been appointed by the proper authorities of the Methodist
Protestant Church, to conduct a Book Establishment or
Concern, in the city of Baltimore, with a view of furnish-
ing the community with appropriate books and publica-
tions of a religious and literary character, and have prayed
for an act of incorporation, that they may be belter enabled
to carry such purpose into effect — therefore,

Preamble.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That John Clark, Beale H. Richardson, Philip
S. Chappell, James R. Williams, Andrew A. Lipscomb,
James K. Everist, Charles W. Ridgely, and William L.
Richardson, and their successors, be and they are hereby

declared to be a body corporate and politic, by the name,
style and title of the President and Directors of the Book

Concern of the Methodist Protestant Church, and by the
same shall be made capable in law, to sue and be sued,
plead and be impleaded, in any court of law or equity, in
this State or elsewhere; to make a common seal, and the
same to break, alter or renew at pleasure; to establish and
execute such bye-laws, ordinances and regulations; and

appoint such officers, as a wise and prudent regard to the

interests of the Concern shall dictate; to have, hold and
receive goods, chattels and effects of what nature and des-
cription soever, not to exceed in the whole sixty thousand
dollars in value; and to purchase materials and make con-
tracts for the purchasing, publishing and vending of all
such books, tracts, pamphlets and periodicals, as they
may determine upon.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That the said directors shall
be subject to such, rules and regulations as have been, or
