society of the State.

CHAPTER 148.

CHAP. 149.

An act to authorise Elenor R. Contee, to introduce into this
State certain Negroes, slaves for life.

Passed Jan. 30,
1840.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Elenor R. Contee, of Alexandria, District of Colum-
bia, be and she is hereby authorised to introduce into this
State, from said District, the following negroes, slaves for
life, the property of the said Elenor R. Contee, to wit:

Authority to in-
troduce slaves.

Celia, Polly and her child; provided, that the said Elenor
R. Contee shall, within thirty days after the removal of
said slaves or either of them, into this State, file with the
clerk of the county, into which said slave or slaves is or
are introduced, a list or lists of the said slave or slaves so
removed, stating their ages, with an affidavit thereto at-
tached, that the same is a true and faithful list or lists of
the said slave or slaves so removed; and that the said Ele-
nor R. Contee hath not removed the said slave or slaves
into this State for the purpose of sale; and that each of
said negroes is a slave for life; and provided also, that the
sum of fifteen dollars for each slave between the age of
twelve and forty-five years; and that the sum of five dol-
lars for each slave above the age of forty-five and under
twelve years of age, so brought into this State, shall be
paid to the clerk of the county court at the time of giving
such list, to be paid over by him to the Treasurer of the
Western Shore, for the use and benefit of the coloniza-
tion society of the Stale.

CHAPTER 149.

Provisoes.

An act to authorise Josiah Suit, of Prince George's Coun-

ty, to bring into this State a Negro Slave.

Passed Jan. 30,

1840.

Be it enacted by Hie General Assembly of Maryland,
That from and after the passage of this act, it shall and
may be lawful for Josiah Suit, to bring into this State,
from the District of Columbia, a negro slave, the proper-
